Starting Unit 2: Fluency with standard algorithm operations for fractions and decimals.

This unit really builds the upper levels of the number sense foundation for fraction and decimal operations.

Khan Academy: Arithmetic Operations

FRACTION DIVISION:

  • I can interpret and compute the quotient of fractions. (6.NS.1)
  • I can solve contextual problems involving division of fractions using different strategies. (6.NS.1)

First, We will polish off fraction operations with division of fractions.

Below is a link to the Khan Academy free lesson about dividing fractions.  This will be a great help.  I recommend taking the whole lesson!

Long Division including whole numbers and decimals:

  • I can accurately divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. (6.NS.2)
  • I can accurately multiply and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm. (6.NS.3)

Next, we will dig into Long division.  We will explore different division strategies, but we will really look at division through the lens of the standard algorithm.

Here is a link to a whole number division lesson:

here’s decimal division:

Decimal Operations

  • I can accurately add and subtract multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm. (6.NS.3)
  • I can accurately multiply and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm. (6.NS.3)

We will finish the higher levels of Number sense with the mastery of standard algorithm operations for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of multi-digit decimal numbers.  These skills form the foundation for algebra and all of high school math.  This is an important unit, and we need to work hard and focus!

Here is Addition of decimals example:

I hope that these resources will be helpful to you.  The link above at the top of the page takes you the the Khan Academy Arithmetic operations lessons page.  I strongly recommend that everyone looks at these lessons if they feel they missed anything during class.  The videos and lessons do a great job supplementing class lessons.

SOOOoooo……

Happy Mathing!
