Home Learning Oppertunities

Home Learning Opportunities

Nightly homework will consist of word work, reading, and math. For the most part, home learning opportunities in math will be be on the computer and paper pencil.  Only if you do not have internet access at home, students can complete their reading and math homework by coming into the classroom at 7:30 and doing it as a part of their morning work.

Word Work

Word Work will be differentiated based upon your child’s spelling or vocabulary needs. Thus, homework will vary. Most children will be using Words Their Way spelling program. With this program Home Learning opportunities will consist of speed sorts, blind sorts, and other methods which will vary nightly. Prior to your child’s first week of spelling homework I will have a page created on my website describing each nights spelling in more detail.

Reading

Reading Homework consists of completing two quizzes in ReadTheory Monday-Thursday night.  This online reading program gives each child reading skill work at their individualized level.  Students will be taught how to login in the second week of school. Reading homework will begin the third week of school.

Math

Math Homework will consist of two parts.  The first part is 4 pencil paper questions.  These questions will always be a review. Students will be provided the math homework for the entire week on Monday.  Math homework will begin on Monday, August 14. You may also print additional copies of the homework from list link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B4-_2W6LQoV7M0ZSTUFfTGRUS00?usp=sharing

Students are also expected to do one round of Xtra Math.  Xtra Math is a researched based program focusing on building fact fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  The program is reflective of each student’s individual learning needs.  For example, if a student needs more support in memorizing the 6’s times tables, the program will give students more practice in this area.  As a teacher, I really like Xtra Math because it provides clear data on your child’s fact fluency.  Because of the nature of program, students will need to do this each night (Monday-Thursday), rather than attempting to complete the homework in one lump.  Each night will take students about 6 minutes.
