Multiplication

Multiplication is a huge part of 4th grade.  Prior to 4th grade students should have learned with automaticity ALL multiplication facts 0-12.  Students who are still working on these facts usually struggle with the large number multiplication of 4th grade.  The biggest way you can support your child’s learning is to quiz them on their facts nightly or practice Xtra math.

In fourth grade students will learn the following:

  • vocabulary words such as factor, multiple, prime, composite, and product
  • multiply a 1 digit factor by up to 4 digit factor
  • multiply a two digit factor by two digit factor
  • use models such as arrays, bar model, area model, and partial products to multiply

One of the biggest things I hear from parents is that math is not taught the same way as when we were kids.  And you are right! We do not teach the traditional multiplication algorithm that we all used in school–that is actually a 5th grade standard.  We want our students to have a solid understanding of what multiplication is and how it impacts a digit depending on its place value.  In 4th grade the “why” is equally as important as the “how.”  At this age it is much better for your child to learn the methods that we are teaching well…..in fact most children will continue to use these methods even after being taught the old ways.  So, I have included some videos that will be beneficial to both you and your child.
