Division

Students who have a very solid understanding of subtraction, multiplication and are fluent with multiplication facts usually catch onto division very easily.  Like with multiplication, we have “new” ways of solving division problems. Instead of traditional long division, your champion will be learning a strategy called partial quotients.  Here is what we expect students to know by the end of the division unit.

  • vocabulary such as quotient, factor, partial product, dividend, and divisor
  • the partial quotient strategy to divide a upto a 4 digit dividend with a one digit divisor
  • Interpret how the remainder affects the meaning of the problem

Here are the types of problems that students will be seeing:

  • 3, 489 students attend the county high schools.  If the county has 4 schools, how many students attend each school?
  • Sue bought 8,690 yards of ribbon for her hair bow company.  Each hair bow uses 4 yards. Sue sells each hair bow for 7 dollars.  How much money will sue make if she sells all her hair bows?

Below is a videos that illustrate how to solve a division problem using partial quotients. It also mentions vocabulary that students need to know.
