Addition, subtraction, and place value will be out first unit.  This unit is important because it sets the foundation for everything else we do in fourth grade.  Something that is new for 4th graders is using the traditional subtraction algorithm when problem solving. By the end of the unit students will know the following:

• Place value to the millions place
• use inequalities to compare numbers
• recognize that place value increase 10 times as a digit moves from right to left.
• Use the traditional algorithm to add numbers in the millions
• Learn and use the traditional algorithm to subtract numbers in the million.
